Although there are many different Windsor designs, the traditional hand made North American Windsor has the following elements of style.

The chair anchor is the seat. The seat should be made of a single board of pine or basswood, usually about 2” thick. The oval and the shield are the popular seat shapes.

The legs, stretchers, and short spindles are turned from a hardwood; cherry, yellow birch, or maple. They are turned individually in the traditional Windsor styles.

The spindles, back, and arm are shaped from rived wood (a log split lengthways) for strength, flexibility, and more elegant appearance.

Volutes are circle like carvings on the arm and the crest ends. These are hand carved.

The top of the chair legs are taper-drilled through the seat and wedged, as are spindle tops on the Sackbacks. Crests on Comb and Fan Backs, have the spindles pinned with wooden dowels after assembly.

The result of incorporating the traditional style elements and designs results in a chair of enduring fashion, strength, comfort, and individuality.
